- Özet
he primary aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive scale that measures the awareness and implementation levels of middle school students aged 10–14 regarding their rights in the digital world. The sample group of the study consists of 307 students attending a public middle school in Istanbul during the 2024–2025 academic year, who are enrolled in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The research consists of two parts. In the first part, the scale was developed; in the second part, the scale was administered to the sample group using the cross-sectional survey method, one of the quantitative research methods, and the data were collected face to-face. The developed scale consists of two forms. The “Children’s Rights in the Digital World Scale: Awareness Form,” which measures children’s knowledge and awareness of their rights in the digital world, consists of 22 items and explains 57,23% of the total variance. The scale includes three sub-dimensions: awareness of access rights, awareness of freedom of expression, and awareness of protection rights. The reliability coefficients for the sub-dimensions were found to be 0,86, 0,76, and 0,92, respectively. The ‘Children’s Rights in the Digital World Scale: Implementation Form’, which measures children’s levels of implementing their rights in the digital world, consists of 24 items and explains 60,36% of the total variance. This scale also includes three sub-dimensions: practices related to access rights, practices related to freedom of expression, and practices related to protection demands. The reliability coefficients for these sub-dimensions were found to be 0,85, 0,77, and 0,92, respectively. As data collection tools, a ‘Demographic Information Form’, the “Children’s Rights in the Digital World Scale” developed by the researcher, and the “Digital Rights and Responsibilities Scale” were used in order to test the reliability of the developed scale through the parallel forms technique. The SPSS 26.0 package program was used for data analysis. An independent samples t-test was conducted for binary groups, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied for variables consisting of three or more groups. The findings of the study revealed that middle school students’ levels of awareness and implementation regarding digital rights are generally high, that the dimensions of protection, access, and freedom of expression are significantly related to one another, and that these levels differ according to certain demographic variables.
